Cat Treat Recipes!

 Baked Fish Cakes

Choose organic ingredients whenever possible.  This recipe can easily be cut in half, or, make up the fish blend, and freeze in small portions, for future use.  A little goes a long way.

Ingredients

2 pounds ground white fish, for example, Tillapia, Pollock, Cod

3 eggs

2 carrots

2 teaspoons Acadian sea kelp

4 tablespoons oatmeal

1/4 cup cold pressed oil, for example, first pressed extra virgin olive oil

3/4 cup filtered water, fish or vegetable stock, or a combination

Nori sheets for wrapping fish cakes

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F degrees.  Combine all ingredients, except the fish, in a food processor or blender.  Turn out into a large mixing bowl.  Add fish and combine thoroughly.  Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or lightly grease cookie sheets.  You can make perfect large cakes for your dog, by using an old fashioned ice cream scoop, and to make small patties for your feline companion, try using a fruit scoop, like those used for making melon balls.  After scooping, place each in the middle of a Nori sheet, flatten cake with a fork, and wrap each cake like a present and lay on the cookie sheet.  Pop your cookie sheets into the oven.  Bake for approximately 1 hour.  Remove Nori wrapped fish cakes from the oven and cool completely, before storing in your refrigerator or freezer.  Slice and serve.

As an alternative, line a 9 X 12 pyrex with the Nori sheets (bottom and sides), scoop fish mix into the pyrex and make sure it is evenly spread out, and top with Nori sheets before baking, according to the instructions above.

Kelp Kisses

Choose organic ingredients whenever possible.

Ingredients

1 can wild sockeye salmon (160 grams/5.65 ounces), Pacific Coast Wild solid white Albacore tuna (180 grams/6.35 ounces), mackerels (120 grams/4.23 ounces), or sardines (120 grams/4.23 ounces)

2 cups stone ground whole grain flour, for example, whole brown rice, whole oats, or, as an alternative, try quinoa, although not technically a true whole grain, it can be used in the same way

1 tablespoon fresh parsley or 1-1/2 teaspoons dried parsley*

1-1/2 teaspoons Acadian sea kelp, dulse, or Irish moss

1/2 teaspoon sea salt (optional)

1 cup filtered water or fish stock

1/4 cup first pressed extra virgin olive oil or rice bran oil

*For your feline companions, substitute 1 teaspoon of parsley, with 1 teaspoon of dried catnip.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F degrees.  Simply put all the ingredients into a food processor or blender, and whirl until everything is thoroughly combined and really smooth.  Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.  Then, pretend you are making deviled eggs, and scoop the mixture into a cookie press.  Choose a shaping disc, for example, a star, and then have some fun pulling the trigger on your cookie press.  If you don’t have a cookie press, don’t despair;  you can spoon the mixture out onto your cookie sheets, the way you would with drop cookies.  Bake in pre-heated oven for 20 minutes, and then turn your oven off, letting your kisses cool completely in the oven, before storing them in an airtight container or ziplock bag, in the refrigerator.  These treats also freeze well.

Kombu Candy

Choose organic ingredients whenever possible.

Ingredients

Package of Kombu, for example, Barkley Sound Kombu

1/4 cup unpasteurized local honey

1/2 cup filtered water

1 cup finely ground Brazil nuts, which are packed with selenium, a trace element that assists with heart function and supports the immune system.

Instructions

Soak dried Kombu pieces in filtered water until they are soft.  Drain and cut Kombu into small pieces, enough to fill 1/2 cup.  Combine 1/4 cup unpasteurized local honey with 1/2 cup filtered water, and bring to a boil.  Reduce the heat to simmer, add the Kombu, and continue to gently cook until the liquid has evaporated.  This takes about 1 hour.  Spread 1 cup of ground almonds or 1 cup of ground Brazil nuts on a cookie sheet that has been covered with parchment paper.  Then, take Kombu pieces and coat them in the ground nuts.  Bake in a preheated 300F degree oven for 30 minutes.  Cool completely before enticing your pets with these tasty morsels.  This is a treat the whole family can share.

Notes about Ingredients

Parsley is rich in iron and Vitamin C, and also contains pro-vitamin A, calcium, phosphorus, and manganese.  It is considered one of the world’s most concentrated food sources.

Olive oil is rich in omega-9 oleic acid, a mono-saturated fat that is considered one of the good guys, protecting the heart and supporting skin health.  Extra virgin olive oil is oil from the first pressing of the olives.  There is less than 1% acidity and it has the highest nutritional value.  Olive oil is a rich source of Vitamins A, E, D, and K.  It helps to improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and is heart healthy.  In Greece, every man, woman, and child, consumes an average of five gallons of olive oil a year!  Our feline friends have barbed tongues, which makes it difficult for them to spit hair out, after their daily grooming ritual.  As a result, they swallow the hair, which can lead to vomiting and, in some cases, intestinal obstructions.  One teaspoon of olive oil added to your cat’s food each day, may be the perfect solution.  Olive oil is also great for making your own herbal infusions, and used topically, it is effective for calming inflamed ears.

Rice Bran Oil is naturally rich in both tocopherol ad tocotrienol Vitamin E, which are natural antioxidants that help fight free radicals, known to cause cancer.  Gamma oryzanol is another antioxidant found in rice bran oil, and the oil’s 27 phytosterols offer a variety of health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties, and they inhibit the growth of cancer cells, supporting the immune system.  Rice bran oil also contains carotenoids, including beta-carotene, alpha carotene, lycopene, and lutein, essential amino acids, including tryptophan, histidine, methionine, cystein, cystine, and argenine, 9 B vitamins, polysaccharides, and phospholipids, vital to the maintenance of healthy cell membranes.  Coenzyme Q10, superoxidase dismutase, and lecithin, are also found in rice bran oil.
